Hello,

I’m Kate.

Kate Van Boss is the creative practice of Katie Friedlander-Boss—but because absolutely no one could ever spell my surname, let's just stick to Kate!

I am an artist, author, comedy writer, educator, and neuroscience-based mind-body coach with over 20 years’ experience helping people learn, grow, and connect. Much of my career has been spent teaching and facilitating creative learning in higher education.

Then came a very unoriginal origin story: I contracted Long Covid. To heal, I had to develop a deep understanding of neuroscience and mind-body medicine, alongside my own art practice - that old chestnut.

Through that journey, I realized something vital: this isn’t just medicine for healing illness. This is medicine for a healthy life. And I knew I had to share it.

Today, my work sits at the fascinating intersection of joy, storytelling, and neuroscience.

The Science of Joy (and Why Being a "Proper Adult" is Overrated)

A healthy life has everything to do with creativity, curiosity, humor, and human connection. I take the science behind this seriously—I just don't believe learning has to be serious all the time.

When we feel safe, curious, and engaged, our brains enter a state of neuroplastic flow. We become more flexible, creative, and open to new ideas. Bottom line? Joy is the magic pill for a healthy life.

Many of our patterns of thinking are shaped early in life. Rather than encouraging people to “grow out of” those early ways of being, my work suggests there is wisdom in returning to them.

That is why I am also a children's writer and illustrator. Children are the people we allow to let go and have fun. When a child paints, they paint what they feel, not what they see. How wonderful is that? Adults need that level of freedom too. Writing children’s books allows me to stretch my ridiculous, colour-filled imagination and lean into the absurd—giving parents a moment to let go, be silly, and remember that life is ridiculous. And that's part of the joy.

Bringing Kate van Boss to Social Media

On YouTube Shorts I use the healing power of art to find the joy and bring calm back to your nervous system.

What is amazing for me is that I get huge joy from creating the art and hopefully you get huge joy from seeing my creations. It's a win/win.

And this is all backed by neuroscience - you can use joy to heal from chronic conditions.
